Catholic University: Cardinal O'Boyle Foreign Studies Competition Studio, Fall 2014, Houston Texas

James W Tilghman AIA Visiting Design Instructor

The subject of the Fall 2014 Competition Studio is an experimental Housing Community in Ward 3 of Houston Texas, an underserved yet developing urban area seperated from downtown by substantial infrastructure. The studio investigated a broad range of modular, performance driven concepts for a site adjacent a major interstate artery in Houston. The Studio work began with a series of smaller conceptual "film making" exercises that explored themes of space, spatial orientation, movement and community psychology in preparation for the design phase for a 200 unit Housing Community.

The studio visited Houston in October, and held the mid-review at the Houston Offices of Gensler. The competition was a two-stage jury process in which shortlisted schemes were identified in the final review, and these finalists competed in a second blind jury for 5 first prizes and 5 Honorable mentions. Students in the Houston Studio won 3 of the 5 First prizes and 2 Honorable mentions

The NASA Langley Integrated Engineering Services Building, one of three buildings to be designed by AECOM under the NASA Langley New Town Program, and the GSA Design Excellence Program, has received a 2015 AIA Northern Virginia Merit Award for excellence  in Institutional Architecture.  James W Tilghman, AIA was the GSA Design Excellence Lead Designer for the NASA New Town Program.

The 120,000 sf IESB, which contains Conferencing, Lecture and Presentation, Media, Cafeteria and Departmental Administrative spaces functions as the new Campus Center for NASA Langley, integrating many functions formerly widely distributed across campus. The design makes reference to many historic research spaces, including both existing and decommissioned wind tunnels, which form the core research capability of NASA Langley-the nation's first Aeronautical Research Facility, founded in 1917.

Under Construction 2017

M12/James W Tilghman AIA have teamed with a local Chinese firm to

win #1 ranking in a competition for a new 1.0 m sf Biomedical Research Campus in Nanjing, China. The project contains a range of startup company buildings of increasing gross area to meet a broad ranged Biotech R & D enterprise model . The integrated campus contains conferencing, exhibition, research and development facilties and extensive public and private landscaped exterior spaces that respond to the intersection of the natural and urban site contexts, one of the hallmarks of the site.

Undergraduate Students will be exploring Urban design and revitalization strategies during the first half of the semester and will transition to building design projects after spring break. Graduate students will continue to develop the masterplanning process for the entire semester.
